Netley Castle - An English Heritage
Country: United Kingdom  Monday, September 29, 2003 at 07:52

For those who would embrace the opportunity to reside in an English Castle, one luxury apartment is for sale on the ground floor facing the sea for UKŁ 595,000.
Netley Castle resides in England’s green and pleasant county of Hampshire close to the port of Southampton and the meandering river Hamble. Netley has assumed many mantles over the centuries; having been in turn a Cistercian Abbey, a medieval fort, a private house of great grandeur and a convalescent home. This splendidly English grade II listed building was originally constructed as a much smaller fort by Henry VIII to protect Southampton Water and sprawls majestically in a surround of magnificent gardens with the Solent lapping at a pebble beach just yards away. Netley Castle remained unchanged as it served Kings, Queens and country; keeping a watchful eye on its watery charge until the 1880’s, when it was purchased by the Crichton family. The new owners commissioned the architect J D Sedding to transform the property into a Victorian Gothic style castle, a common whim of the day, adding castellated wings and towers on either side of the original building.

This “scheduled ancient monument” now houses nine; two to three bedroom apartments, a tower house and a boat house in a glorious environment steeped in English tradition and history. Netley has in it’s lifetime played host to many illustrious visitors including Queen Elizabeth the 1st in 1560 and King Charles the 1st who visited in 1648, these events are commemorated in two corners of a resplendent stone fireplace in the dining room of one of the apartments. Every effort has been made to preserve the character and heritage of Netley Castle including the original fine oak paneling and stained glass windows, it remains an exquisitely faithful architectural ambassador for all that is English.
